Pupils look to the HELIX for future employment opportunties
Pupils in Grangemouth have had their business hats on for a second time to take a close look at one of Falkirk Council's biggest economic development initiatives.
The HELIX is the main theme for the Grangemouth S1 Challenge, which took place on 28/29 January 2008 and is a follow up to the World of Work Week, which they took part in last year.
Over the two days they completed a HELIX based challenge with a focus on how it can support the curriculum, how it can be used socially, the type of job opportunities it will present and how to make it financially sustainable.
A variety of local businesses acted as consultants for the challenge, which involved over 130 S1 pupils from Grangemouth High.
Dr Alex Waddell, Convener of the Education and Leisure Committee said: 'We have an excellent track record bringing economic development and local business into the classroom.
'Everyone involved works together to achieve cross-cutting outcomes. For education, there are clear links to the curriculum for excellence, the young people are working in teams challenging ideas and perceptions and enterprising skills. It helps them make connections between what they learn at school and how this will help them gain a foothold in their future careers.'
The two day event took S1 pupils on an informative journey through the many career opportunities the HELIX could offer them as adults of the future.
The event was jointly planned between the Grangemouth Enterprise Centre, FEAT, the Enterprise in Education team and the school.
World of Work and Determined to Succeed events allows pupils to become familiar with the skills, attitudes and qualities needed to become successful in life and work.
