Falkirk Wheel Is A Top Ten
Treasured Place
An image of the Falkirk Wheel has been selected by the public as one of their favourite Scottish monuments.
As part of its centenary celebrations, The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) launched a public vote to find Scotland's favourite piece of built heritage. The Falkirk Wheel, the world's first and only rotating boat lift, was voted fifth in the top ten list.
Carole Keltie, Manager at The Falkirk Wheel, said: "This is fantastic news. The public vote has reinforced the long held view that The Falkirk Wheel is a truly inspirational piece of working sculpture. It would be wonderful if the public could get behind the Wheel one more time and help make it Scotland's most Treasured Place in the final poll."
One hundred photographs were selected for the RCAHMS Treasured Places: Scotland's Favourite Archive Images project. The top 100 included castles, feats of engineering and pieces of architecture.
The full Top Ten images will be given a place in a major centenary exhibition that will tour the country in 2008.
Cllr Adrian Mahoney, Falkirk Council's Convener of Environment and Heritage is also backing the bid: 'The Falkirk Wheel is a fabulous attraction for the Falkirk Council area and brings in visitors from across the world.
'While it is a relatively new landmark, its place nationally and internationally cannot be underestimated.'
