What Type of Marriage Do You Want?
There are two ways you can be married in Scotland, either a religious ceremony or a civil ceremony.
-
A religious marriage, which may take place anywhere, is carried out by a minister, clergyman, pastor, priest or other person entitled to do so under the Marriage (Scotland) Act 1977.
-
A civil marriage, which may take place in a registration office or approved place, may be carried out only be a Registrar or Assistant Registrar. You can find out lists of approved places throughout Scotland from the General Register Office for Scotland.
