Organising a Funeral
Finding a funeral director
Although you can organise a funeral yourself, a funeral director| will take over all the funeral arrangements and provide support to the family. Make sure you find a reputable funeral director who is a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors|. You will need to make various decisions| which the undertaker will go through with you.
Cremation or burial
The decision on whether to have a cremation or a burial| will depend on the person's own wishes, the views of the executor(s), the wishes of the next of kin and the costs involved. However, it should be noted that any stated wish by the deceased is not binding on the executors or the next of kin in deciding on the type of funeral. Also, in any case where the Procurator Fiscal is involved, their decision as to whether the person can be cremated over-rides any other, although they will normally only refuse cremation in exceptional circumstances.
