What's On

Big in Falkirk

In line with the Council's Public Arts Strategy 2006-11, an artists brief was distributed to commission an experienced artist to work with the local community to create a piece of site-specific artwork to be located in the town square in the new town centre.

The commission is for one permanent structure linked to other aspects of the town's new public realm and drawing on the town's industrial, social and cultural heritage.

Out of 17 quality submissions, the Council and its community partners created a short leet of 4 artists who will had their work displayed in Larbert Library from 18 January 2010 to 05 February 2010 for local people to view and comment on.

Following the two week consultation period the public vote is as follows:

Taking Stenhousemuir heritage as a starting point – creating two highland cows (McCowan's) made in cast-iron (Carron Ironworks) meeting on a heather covered mound surrounded by a heart-shaped pathway of LED lights (Tryst).

Schools workshops to explore cattle in world sculpture.

The starting point for the piece is to trace the journey of molten metal in metal casting process (from crucible to well then along runners and risers). These elements would be developed into stylised head and shoulders sculpture (cast in bronze) suggesting a nurturing/ caring pose (also creates seating). The overall 'footprint' of sculpture references the circular footprint of Arthur's O'on.

Lara Greene

Sculpture (steel, concrete, pebbles, plant beds) to provide a meeting point/ crossroads (both in place and time).

A celebration of Stenhousemuir's current regeneration (themes of creation, transformation, potential) whilst recognising the cultural and historical significance of the area's past (trade, resources, industry).

Design potential to be influenced by school's workshops.

Sculpture based around the main image of a crucible pouring molten metal. The structure of the piece has the capacity to contain/ be formed by a range of images/ icons reflecting the history of the area and presenting identity and vision for future.

Local research for imagery to be sourced through museum visits, discussion with local groups, workshops in schools.
