Creating a Sustainable Local Environment and Improving Transport

Canal

While this theme emphasises the need to promote sustainable development, its key priorities and actions have a clear environmental focus. Integration of such environmental factors, with other themes of the Strategic Community Plan is also a significant issue. Other themes within the Plan lead on the delivery of the economic and social dimensions of sustainable development.

The subject content within this theme is very wide, including: transport, physical development, bio-diversity, built heritage, climate change, waste, energy conservation and related topics. Given this diversity, the theme has not been progressed through the activities of a fixed group, meeting on a regular basis, but through a variety of established and new partnership working arrangements. There is already significant community involvement in most topic areas through such arrangements. The various consultative processes that accompany the development of the wide range of strategies that underpin the theme, also engage the community and partner agencies.

Our Priorities for the Future

In order to achieve our vision and create a sustainable environment and improve transport and access for all, we will:

  • Contribute to action addressing climate change;
  • Improve the approach to waste management;
  • Improve the quality of the built and natural environment;
  • Promote a safe and efficient multi-modal transport system, which minimises impact on the environment; and
  • Raise awareness of sustainable development and environmental issues within communities and partners.
